•December 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

So group sixteen went to the revival of Spring Hill Church. It was an interesting experience. I enjoued working on this project with all of my group mates. It took lots of time and work, but I loved every second of it.

The Photojournalism in the Web class, taught me so many things that I didnt know how to do. I learned how to edit sound, I learned how to shoot video, and how to put multi- media projects together in a short period of time. I will take everything that I have learned in the course with me, and try to make something great with it, as I learn each technique introduced to me better.

Thank you.

NPPA Video on the Journey of the Election…

•November 10, 2008 • Leave a Comment

This video was very moving to me for several reasons. I enjoyed how the video covered both candidates years before the 2008 election even came about. The way that the journalists  moved from the impact that president Bush, our current president, has on the American people, to the influence that had on all republican candidates, and the carefully calculated plan for the new president elect- helped tell the story effectively.

It gave a very unbiased point of view of all of the presidential candidates and even touched on how relatability of Sarah Palin to the American people. I liked how they put a different spin on John McCain, it made him seem like he was less strong headed and more compassionate than I had seen him in almost any story prior to election day. It almost seemed as though McCain and Obama, were very close to being on the same side. He seemed to have a sense of humor, less harsh than he seemed to be in the past.

When the story first started it had a very clean cut, organized way of showing the points of view that they researched on several states. I liked how the pictures and the audio were linked to different areas on the map, and how the story itself followed a time line that was shown through out the multi-media story. I have no earthly idea what program they used to pull that off, but it was very interesting and easy to watch.

Overall, I enjoyed the video, it had a very clean cut way of seperating the beginning, middle, and end of the story, and the photography was amazing. The pictures of all the emotional people, both republican and democrat made me feel emotional with them.

Alva III soundslide

My sound slide presentation was on a UNT chemistry student named Chip, or Alva III. The assignment was to do a sound slide show on student life. I had difficulty not only picking an aspect of student life, but also developing a story with a beginning, middle, and an end. I chose to do a chemistry student in his junior year, hoping for an interview about how majoring in Chemistry at UNT would make him a better student because of the location, and size of the school. I also wanted to show how him being located near his parents would make him a more successful responsible student, which would lead him into a good career in pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, my questions weren’t straight forward enough so my audio lacked structure. I was working towards showing Chip’s path through school through my photography, which could have been better if I had allowed myself more time. Overall, my very first sound slide assignment was disastrous to me, but I did learn a great deal about how to form a story, and about how much time even a 20 picture; minute and a half presentation can be, which will help me develop way better projects in the future.

I almost forgot the story, “I Want Luis Back”

Defense of Multimedia-

I chose the aspect of emotion. Grant was correct in saying that video is a good medium for conveying emotion, I chose the story “I Want Luis Back,” a great story about the murder of a 13 year old boy. It’s a great story because it shows his las touching moments with his family through photography, but emotions felt by the story tellers through video. The audio was heartbreaking, because it wasn’t just the story being told, it was the sound of crying , and the sound of the funeral. I think that capturing the intense sound with the video is what made  this story so emotional. Texts and stills alone couldn’t do that.

The things I liked about these multimedia websites were…

Churchill speeches-

I really  liked the graphics but there were a few things that bothered me. When you get to the page of all of the speeches, it appears as though they would be in chronological order, but in reality, the links are just strewn about the site. The audio was really interesting  because it helped complete the slides. The audio connected the history behind the photos from the time period. I especially liked how you could tell that the audio was really old, that added the the authenticity of the speeches. The scrolling of the words as the speech was delivered was a nice touch. I didn’t find this site to be very interactive. I thought the Halifax website was alot better at putting you in the events. I liked the photography alot, each picture was very relevant to the speech that was being given. The lack of video didnt really bother me, seeing as how it would have been difficult to capture video successfully back then. The writing was effective, you could follow the audio with the words of the speech, as the highlighter moved down the screen, it helps anyone who might not be able to understand the audio.

Halifax Explosion of 1917 (Nova Scotia)

The interactivity of this website was really neat to me. The timeline of the Halifax Explosion was nice because you could follow the progression of the event every minute.Even though there were alot of links to the information on this page, the graphics aren’t overwhelming. Under the media gallery you can see the video about the survivors. It adds even more history which is amazing. The photos of the Halifax Explosion might be old, but they were effective, they show you close up the damage that the explosion had and how devestating it must have been for its victims. The audio is very improtant becasue the description of the disiaster by the victimis made the text version of the story more rich. The writing leads to through the history of the events from the reason why Halifax was important to the explosion, the build up to the explosion grabs the reader and almost makes the event personal to the reader.

I also went a step further and looked at some interactive portfolios, I found these two to be very interesting.

audio interview

•September 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

This past week for pj and the web I interviewed Wendy Moore, a professor at Texas Weslyan University who graduated with a masters from UNT. The interview was basically about how the students and the teaching methods are different in each school. Wendy believes the students at Weslyan to be harder workers than the students here at UNT. First Day

It’s the first day of school, and I have been asked to design my own web blog specifically for my  journalism in the web class.  Even though the times are messed up. it’s really 5:25 p.m. on the 25 of August. This should be fun, but Im not so sure yet- seeing as how it just started. I’m hoping to develop some new skills that I haven’t learned yet so that I can utilize them in my career. Making a weblog on word press is already a new skill, so I guess I’m headed in the right direction.
